A must-stop in Iceland, this bakery is known for its freshly baked bread and pastries. Ljósdis Kaffihús & Bakeri in Höfn is a tight squeeze, but if you arrive early enough, you might secure a table inside! Considering most coffee spots beyond Reykjavik open its doors at noon (or any place for that matter!), it’s no wonder this café is popular in the area, filling up the entire space in a short amount of time. We arrived right at opening, claiming a table just after we finished ordering. Besides one bench, there isn’t many outdoor seating–and considering the unpredictable weather–it may not be very fun to eat outside. Most people who sat indoors didn’t take longer than needed, respecting the time of others, so maybe you’ll be lucky with a seat, too! If not, kitties roam outside to keep you company.

Ljósdis Kaffihús & Bakeri is known for its fresh sourdough bread, which lived up to its hype! If there is anything you need to take to-go, it is their sourdough bread. Other items to try are: their classic Icelandic treats and signature cinnamon rolls. When it comes to coffee, this café offers high-quality beans. Some drinks off their menu include traditional coffees, lattes, and cappuccinos. All their drinks come served in huge mugs–as long as you’re dining in! We ordered two lattes (one with vanilla), two black coffees, one bread pudding, one cinnamon roll, one chocolate muffin, two cheese garlic sticks, one sourdough bread, and one raspberry shortbread. Everything we purchased was well worth it, especially their hot coffee during the chilly summer morning.

To reiterate, most places beyond Reykjavik open later in the day. You’ll be lucky to find any coffee shops, even gas station coffees, open before noon. Remember the name Ljósdis Kaffihús & Bakeri in Höfn because this bakery/café opens early every day (besides Mondays as they are closed!) Ljósdis Kaffihús & Bakeri opens their doors at 9 AM and closes at 3 PM. Be sure to arrive bright and early as the tables will fill up quickly. So, take your second coffee to go, because your next favorite waterfall is just around the corner of this cozy bakery.
