We were barely awake when we found ourselves ordering homemade whipped cream out of a coffee van in Puerto Rico and calling that moment one of the best parts of our trip. KFerra is a small café that runs out of a hippie-style van parked on the side of a road in Vega Baja. You’ll find a few tables outside, greenery around, and the rich smell of coffee brewing. KFerra needed nothing more to make the space feel welcoming and easy to settle into.

The food? So good. Everything is made from scratch! Fresh pastries, homemade whipped cream, and bread that’s still warm when it hits the table. The owner grows and roasts the coffee beans himself, and you can taste just how fresh the beans are. The coffee is rich and smooth and doesn’t need sugar or cream to be good (I still added the homemade whipped cream because… obviously!) Prices were also super reasonable, which always makes everything taste better.

KFerra serves Espresso, Pocillo, Americano, Latte, Cappuccino, Mocha, Chai Latte, Ristretto, Machiato, and Dirty Chai (so good!). Don’t worry, alternate-milk lovers; there are options beyond regular milk here: Soy and Almond. This café does offer syrups for its drinks; however, I would recommend skipping them. Enjoy the taste of the coffee beans’ natural notes! The cups come in an 8-ounce and a 10-ounce size.

The real star of KFerra is the owner, Daniel. He was a former surfer for 40 years. He asked us about our trip, gave us tips on where to go (and where not to swim!), and somehow ended up giving us life advice in the middle of it all. At one point, he said, “If you can see it in your mind, you can manifest it in your life.” KFerra opens at 4 a.m. and closes at 10 a.m. If you pass through Vega Baja early in the morning, make time to stop by. The coffee is great, and the conversations make it worth waking up for!
